There appear to be two distinct approaches to creating a business. Traditional or left brain business thinking where the owner sets out to sell a product or service. This is pure economics with the owner answering just one question; can I sell this and make a profit?
And then there’s new economy or right brain business approach in which the owner asks themselves questions like “what do I want to do with my life? what’s important to me? And what am I passionate about?”
I recently read an article about crafting your business values and I was left wondering what the CEO of BHP would make of such advice as it was very ‘new age’ and the antithesis of traditional business thinking.
So how do you decide which type of thinking is right for you?
While creating She business last year I relentlessly pursued 3 distinct groups of questions:
Value and greater good
Was there sufficient reason and research to warrant creating a female only business community?
If so, could I add a value to an already crowded industry?
Could my business model really make a difference to businesswomen?
Could I encourage discussion and understanding around diversity?
Could we increase the success rate and profitability of female owned businesses?
Fulfillment and alignment with core values
Could I impact the way women work together and attain for myself and members:
Full self expression
Integrity and honesty in conversation
Generosity
Valuing contribution of all members
Accountability
Ownership
Leadership
Lastly,
Turning a profit
Could I contribute to the family finances in a way that worked for me and my family?
Could I grow a sustainable business model?
Staying true to my desire to work within the new economy I felt the equation looked like this
1+1+ heart + soul + community.
It always seemed the traditional left brained journey was a simpler one and looked a little like this;
1+1=2.
Being relentless in this process has given me a really strong foundation for my business and a greater understanding of who I am as a business person and having such clarity has given me a place to retreat to when the days get tough. I wonder whether you’ve gone through a similar process and would love to hear from you if you have.
Are more left or right brained?
